Queensferry Crossing reopens to drivers after days of road closures for safety fears

The Queensferry Crossing has reopened after days of closures for safety reasons.

Eight vehicles were damaged by falling ice as they travelled over the bridge, which connects Fife and Edinburgh, amid wintry conditions on Monday.

Motorists had been facing a 35-mile diversion over the Kincardine Bridge as officials moved to close the £1.35 billion Queensferry Crossing in both directions.

The bridge was reopened from 10.45am on Wednesday.

Building contractors say they are 'confident' that it is now safe to open the bridge once again.

The Queensferry Crossing will be closely monitored over the course of the day as more wintry weather is anticipated for the area.

Mark Arndt, account director for operating company Amey, said: "We thank drivers for their patience and understanding during this closure. Safety had to come first, however the data we have gathered has improved our understanding of the issue and will help us to improve predictions and refine operating procedures in future.”

The closure was the first time the Queensferry Crossing had been shut to drivers since it opened to the public in 2017.

The bridge had been expected to remain open in all weathers. It was fitted with 3.5m high barriers designed to ensure the structure wouldn’t be closed by high winds.

One driver, whose car was damaged on Monday, described a “huge bang” when a chunk of falling ice smashed into his windscreen as he drove over the bridge.

No one in the eight vehicles involved in the incident were injured.
