Queensferry Crossing closed to traffic as reports emerge of ice falling on to vehicles

The Queensferry Crossing has been closed to traffic as reports emerge of ice falling on to vehicles.

Edinburgh Police confirmed shortly after 5.30pm that the southbound route has been completely shut off until further notice. It was then closed to all traffic, north and southbound, at around 8.30pm.

Police added that the "there is no diversion over the Forth Road Bridge" and motorists are required to use an alternative route. Police say that the road has been closed due to "adverse weather".

However a number of people are reporting on social media that the closure has been put in place due to "ice falling off the bridge". Edinburgh Live has spoke to one woman who was left shaken after a 3ft block of ice crashed into her windscreen.

The Forth Bridges official Twitter account confirmed that the closure is a "precautionary measure due to risk of falling ice and snow from the cables".

Traffic Scotland say that the diversion motorists should take southbound is via the A985 and onto the Kincardine Bridge, before heading southbound onto the M9.

They have added that the "situation will be monitored overnight and reevaluated" but that it is "highly likely" the bridge will remain closed through the Tuesday morning peak.

This is likely to add to the travel disruption being experienced throughout Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife on Monday evening caused by Storm Ciara and the ongoing snow showers.
