Queensferry Crossing closed in both directions after eight vehicles hit by falling ice

The Queensferry Crossing is closed in both directions tonight after eight vehicles were hit by falling ice and snow.

Police Scotland took the decision to shut the M90 road across the River Forth just before 8.30pm.

As a result of the closure there are lengthy diversions for commuters wishing to cross from Fife to Edinburgh and vice-versa.

Motorists heading southbound are being advised to divert to the A985 onto the Kincardine Bridge, and then the M9. While northbound commuters should use the reverse route.

The Queensferry Crossing has been closed due to falling ice (SWNS)

Heavy snowfall and a drop in temperatures has led to ice falling from the structure.

Throughout today eight vehicles were struck with falling ice and snow. Thankfully no one was injured.

Mark Arndt, Account Director for operating company Amey, said: “The decision was taken to close the Queensferry Crossing due to the severe weather conditions and risk of falling ice and snow.

“We are aware of eight vehicles that suffered damage due to falling ice and snow, however there have been no injuries.

"We appreciate this closure will create disruption for drivers, however we are asking drivers to use an alternative mode or route for their safety due to the continued weather conditions.

"We will access conditions and open the bridge at the earliest opportunity once it is safe to do so. We thank drivers for their patience."

While Forth Bridges tweeted: "The Queensferry Crossing is now CLOSED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS due to risk of falling snow and ice.

"Diversion - via A985 onto the Kincardine Bridge & S/B onto the M9 Sorry for the disruption and thank you for your patience.

"We've now observed falls of snow and ice onto the northbound carriageway, so the bridge will remain closed in both directions until visual inspections can be carried out tomorrow to confirm it is safe to reopen."
