Queens Arcade shop owner says Trinity Leeds success is hurting rest of city as he announces closure

A Queens Arcade shop owner has claimed the popularity of Trinity Leeds is hurting the city's other shopping areas, as he announces his store will be closing.

Zaheer Abbas opened Next Level, a shop selling comic merchandise, in Queens Arcade in 2018 after four successful years trading online.

The 36-year-old, who owns the business with his mother, said they were unable to afford costly rent and business rates in the face of reduced footfall.

Often customers would browse inside the shop and then order a product online instead, added Zaheer.

He explained: "Arcade footfall has gone down and moved to the Trinity Centre. I think the council need to do more to advertise different parts of the city.

"Us independents are the heart of the city. If we all go it's just going to be multi-nationals left. The Trinity Centre is great but there are not many independents there."

Next Level will continue as an online business

Zaheer added: "It's quite worrying, every day it seems like its somebody new closing down. Unfortunately now we are part of it.

"Rent is so high and rates are so ridiculously high. We approached the landlord but unfortunately he wouldn't budge."

Next Level will close its doors in February. One full time staff member and two part time roles will be lost when it does.

The online business will continue at nextlevelleeds.co.uk

Zaheer: added: "It's been quite depressing really. We've put a lot into it and overall we have lost a lot of money fitting it out and with rates and rent.

"We've seen a lot of customers coming in and saying they will miss us, which is nice.

"I want to thank them and hopefully the future is good for the business."
