Candice Carty-Williams, award-winning author of bestselling book Queenie, has written Prada’s holiday 2020 campaign.

The author, who was the first black writer to win book of the year at the British Book Awards earlier this year, wrote a story named ‘A Stranger Calls’ especially for the campaign.

Acclaimed fashion photographer Steven Meisel then interpreted Carty-Williams’ fable into a series of arresting images and videos for the campaign, which were shot at Deco Villa Gnutti in the Italian city of Brescia. Creative direction was by Vogue Italia’s Ferdinando Verderi.

Announcing the news on Twitter, Carty-Williams said: “Very excited and still genuinely surprised to say that I wrote the upcoming @Prada holiday advert. After three whirlwind days of shooting in Milan + working with fashion royalty, I’m looking forward to sharing the full campaign movie when it drops.”

In February last year, Prada launched a diversity council headed by film director Ava DuVernay and artist Theaster Gates. The initiative aims to “elevate voices of colour within the company and the fashion industry at large“.

Later in the year, the storied Italian fashion house also became the first luxury brand to sign a sustainability deal.

Prada was founded in Italy in 1913 by Mario Prada - Prada's granddaughter, Miuccia, is now head designer of the brand.
