Queen was once given a fake arm - and her response made people's 'faces drop'

Decades of engagements and royal tours means the Queen has been given countless presents, cards and bouquets of flowers by well-wishers and generous hosts.

And as well as the more traditional gifts the Monarch has been handed a few, well, less traditional items over the years.

Her daughter Princess Anne recalled the hilarious moment the Queen was handed a fake arm and a joint while they were out and about - and her response was simply brilliant.

Speaking in Parkinson in Australia back in 1980, Anne shared the funny anecdote from their Royal Tour of Australia 10 years earlier.

She said: "There were still one or two sort of noisy students about in those days – the end of the Sixties, you know.

"There was this slightly noisy group on arrival, and we thought what are they up to.

“And three of them pushed out of the crowd with this hand and it was a sort of stuffed glove, for want of a better expression, with a joint.

“And these three presented it to the Queen, I think thinking that they were being really rather daring and rather cheeky.

“And the Queen took it from them and said ‘Thank you very much, that is what I’ve always wanted!’

“And their faces literally dropped because this wasn’t quite the reaction they’d expected!”

She goes on to joke that it was exactly what her mother would have wanted while imitating using the hand.

Asked what happened to the arm, Anne said: "Unfortunately somehow it got lost.

“Someone’s sense of humour perhaps didn’t stretch as far as ours.

"We've never seen it again. So if they're watching perhaps they'll make us another one."

During the interview Anne also spoke about the negative coverage of her in the newspapers, saying she didn't believe she fit the "fairy story princess" label.

She said: “It’s difficult, I always think, to take an intelligent interest and wear a grin.”

Speaking about her brother Prince Charles, she added: “But men can be more serious – they’re allowed to be.

“Women aren’t supposed to be funny either.”
