For seven decades the Queen ruled with kindness, wisdom and compassion.
The gratitude and admiration for this life-time of service can be seen in the thousands of bouquets laid at the royal residences.
It was on display from the flags that fly at half mast across the globe, the messages of condolences and the candles lit in her memory.
It was evident from the speeches made in Parliament and from the unprecedented praise paid to the Queen by the world’s leaders.
Most of all, it was written into every word of King Charles ’ heartfelt tribute to his mother when he addressed the nation.
Only after her passing are we coming to appreciate how much Her Majesty achieved and how truly grateful we were to have lived through such an illustrious reign.

Only now are we beginning to understand the extent to which she was a reassuring presence in our lives with a unique ability to bring the nation together.
The country’s sense of loss is deep and heartfelt. We are in mourning not just for a remarkable woman but for a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
This is a moment of great sadness but it is also a moment of uncertainty.
For as long as most of us can remember Queen Elizabeth II was there to guide us.

She comforted the nation in times of despair and led the chorus in times of celebration.
She offered constancy in times of discord and provided harmony in times of unrest.
More than anything else, she exemplified the values which we aspire to live by. She embodied the Britain we would like the country to be.
The next chapter in our history must be written in honour of Her Majesty.

We must strive to keep alive the spirit of togetherness she fostered and act with the decency, humour and understanding she showed throughout her life.
She would have taken heart from the warm welcome extended to King Charles III today as he assumed the reins.
The King last night promised to renew the life-long service his mother had dedicated to the nation. He vowed to serve the country with loyalty, respect and love. We wish him well.
