"We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

A palace source has told the BBC that senior members of the Royal Family feel "hurt" by the announcement.

Meghan and Harry shocked royal fans around the world when they revealed they will no longer be senior members of the Royal Family and will "work to become financially independent".

They shared the statement on Instagram alongside a photo from their engagement photoshoot.

They also announced that they will split their time between the UK and North America.

Meghan and Harry returned to work yesterday following a six-week Christmas break, including a holiday in Canada.

Their bombshell statement has been met with a mixed reaction, with some praising their decision while others hit out at their choice.

Piers Morgan delivered a savage response to the news, tweeting: "People say I'm too critical of  Meghan Markle  - but she ditched her family, ditched her Dad, ditched most of her old friends, split Harry from William & has now split him from the Royal Family. I rest my case."

But fans on their social media pages were much more supportive.

One wrote: "I'm so happy for y'all. You're doing what's best for your family."

Another commented: "Good for you both! It’s so important to carve out your own path as a couple and honor the passions inherent in both of your heritages. Be at peace with your decision. The heart knows best!"
