Queen wants Harry on Buckingham Palace balcony for Jubilee, says royal historian

The Queen wants Prince Harry to join the royal family on the Buckingham Palace balcony next year for her Platinum Jubilee, according to an expert.

Royal historian Robert Lacey told Hello! Magazine that Queen Elizabeth II has remained close to her grandson despite months of rancour.

Harry, the Duke of Sussex, has accused the royal family of racism and neglect in a series of explosive TV interviews since breaking with “The Firm” and moving to the US last year with his wife Meghan Markle.

But Mr Lacey says the Queen still wants her grandson by her side to mark her 70 years on the throne, according to the Daily Express.

It comes as Prince Harry is in the UK for the unveiling of a statue of his late mother Diana.

He said: "The fact that Harry and his grandmother have been able to talk to each other so directly through the last year has been a saving grace of the situation.

"The Queen has always expressed personal sympathy and understanding and I'm sure she'd want Harry on the balcony.

"She would not regard the family as complete without that."

Mr Lacey, who wrote a book called Battle of Brothers about Prince Harry and the royals, believes the Duke of Sussex will return to the UK for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

He also expects Harry to be joined by Meghan Markle and their children, Archie Harrison, 2, and Lilibet Diana, who was born earlier this month.

Mr Lacey said: "I think the children are a major route towards reconciliation."

The 70th year of the Queen's reign is to be marked in 2022 during a four-day-long Bank Holiday weekend.

Celebrations will start on the anniversary of the Queen's coronation in 1952 on June 2nd with a special Trooping the Colour parade.

His claim that Prince Harry has kept in touch with the Queen is supported by comments by Harry in his TV interviews.

Prince Harry told US TV host Oprah Winfrey in March he has spoken "more to my grandmother in the last year than I have done for many, many years".

He said they have video calls so the Queen can see her great-grandchild Archie.

Harry added: "My grandmother and I have a really good relationship and an understanding.

"And I have a deep respect for her. She’s my Colonel-In-Chief, right? She always will be."

The Duchess of Sussex has also revealed she "checked in" with the Queen when she discovered the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, who died in April, had been taken to hospital in mid-February.

Ms Markle told Ms Winfrey: "This morning, I woke up earlier than H and saw a note from someone on our team in the UK saying the Duke of Edinburgh had gone to the hospital.

"But I just picked up the phone and I called the Queen just to check in.

"Just like, I would... you know... that’s what we do.

"It’s like, being able to default to not having to every moment go, 'Is that appropriate?'"

Prince Harry returned to the UK on Friday to attend the unveiling of a statue of Princess Diana later this week.

He is said to have already met with his grandmother.

The Duke is currently self-isolating at Frogmore Cottage where the Queen was seen travelling to roughly half an hour after his arrival.
