The lights in Bond Street
(Picture: Four Communications)The countdown to Christmas has started in Bond Street with the illumination of the shopping district’s 93,000 LED lights.
The Crown Jewels have been faithfully recreated above the heads of shoppers both in celebration of the late Queen’s 70 years on the throne and of London’s jewellery quarter.
The designs, which took more than 12 months to create, have replaced the former peacock feather lights, which were in situ for the past eight years in Bond Street.
Four large scale crowns positioned at different entrances to Bond Street are the centrepiece of the display, which also features platinum, gold, pearl and diamond necklaces strung across the old and new areas of the district.
The new Christmas lights are made up of 93,652 LEDs using recyclable, long-life materials which are more sustainable, creating an efficiency saving of 75 per cent compared to traditional bulbs.
Shoppers can visit the district using the newly upgraded Bond Street station, which is now on the Elizabeth line.
Katie Thomas, New West End Company associate director of Bond Street and Mayfair, said: “Bond Street is one of the most recognised shopping streets in the world. It is the global centre for luxury so our new lights scheme needed to reflect this, and how better than by taking inspiration from the resplendent Crown Jewels.”
The lights are set to remain on display until the first week of January.
It follows Oxford Street’s Christmas lights switch on and the Dior Christmas takeover of Harrods.
