Queen told Lewis Hamilton off for breaking key rule during fancy lunch at Palace

The Queen told Lewis Hamilton off for his bad table manners during a fancy lunch at Buckingham Palace, the Formula 1 legend revealed.

The awkward incident happened back in 2009 when he was invited to an intimate event to celebrate being presented with an MBE.

He was one of eight guests at the event and had the honour of sitting next to the Queen.

The Monarch always picks who she sits next to at these kind of occasions, and will always be beside the most interesting and important male guest.

Prince Philip will normally sit next to the most important female guest.

It was a huge day for Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton (PA)

Speaking to Graham Norton on his BBC chat show, Hamilton recalled that he was very excited when he took his seat and started to chat to the Queen.

But this is a big no-no, and the Monarch quickly pointed it out.

He said: "I got invited to a lunch and was sitting next to The Queen.

“I was excited and started to talk to her but she said, pointing to my left, ‘No, you speak that way first and I’ll speak this way and then I’ll come back to you.’"

Oh dear...

But thankfully the awkward moment didn't ruin the occasion, and when it was Hamilton's turn the pair had a really good chat.

He added: "She is a sweet woman and we talked about how she spends her weekends, houses and music. She is really cool."

In her book My Husband and I, The Inside Story of 70 Years of the Royal Marriage, royal expert Ingrid Seward explained some of the strict table etiquette rules.

She writes: "“The Queen always chooses who she wants to sit beside, and this most important male guest will be on her right, while Prince Philip has the most interesting female guest on his right.”

“Throughout the first and second courses the Queen talks to the person on her right.

“While the pudding and cheeses are being eaten , she turns automatically and chats to the guest on her left.”
