Queen to pause before funeral for final 'moment of reflection' alone with Philip

The Queen will pause for a final 'moment of reflection' with Prince Philip just before his funeral.

The monarch is expected to look at the Duke of Edinburgh's coffin from her moving car ahead of it being taken into St George's Chapel for the ceremony.

It will be the last time the Queen is alone with her husband of more than 70 years before his funeral at Windsor Castle's chapel on Saturday.

In honour of Philip's wishes, she has decided on 'each and every detail' for his ceremony to make sure it is as close to his plans as possible under the trying circumstances of the pandemic.

The Queen will sit on her own in the squire during the funeral because of strict Covid rules.

Like all 30 guests invited to the service, the Queen will wear a face mask.

Because of laws in place to battle the spread of coronavirus anyone attending a funeral must stay at least two metres apart from anyone not in the same household.

Under government guidance which changed from Monday funeral ceremonies must have no more than 30 people attending, whether indoors or outdoors.

Philip was the guiding force behind his funeral arrangements and, reflecting his life-long association with the Royal Navy, buglers of the Royal Marines will sound Action Stations during the service.

It is played on a warship to signal all hands should go to battle stations and is sometimes featured at funerals of naval men.

A reduced choir of four singers will feature during the service and the guests will follow Covid rules and not sing.

Among the guests are the Duke's four children, the Duchess of Cornwall, Sophie Wessex and Princess Anne's husband Sir Timothy Laurence, all of the duke's grandchildren and their spouses, the children of the Queen's sister Princess Margaret, and three of Philip's German relatives - Bernhard, the Hereditary Prince of Baden; Donatus, Prince and Landgrave of Hesse; and Prince Philipp of Hohenlohe-Langenburg.

Also invited is a close friend of the duke, Countess Mountbatten of Burma, previously known as Lady Romsey and later Lady Brabourne, who was Philip's carriage driving partner and one of his closest friends.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that royal men will wear morning coats with their medals and the women will wear day dresses.
