Queen to 'have words' with Prince William over helicopter safety fears, says expert

The Queen will be "having words" with Prince William over his use of helicopters, an expert has reported.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Her Majesty has been urging her grandson to stop flying in helicopters with the Duchess of Cambridge and their children on board over safety fears.

The monarch is said to be "terrified" an accident could happen, threatening William's succession to the throne.

And according to the Daily Mail's Richard Eden, the Queen will be talking to William about his use of helicopters when he and the rest of the Cambridges visit her at Windsor Castle over the Christmas period.

He adds that the monarch is concerned about using helicopters after a crash killed the Captain of the Queen's Flight and three others in Newbury, Berkshire, in 1967.

Air Commodore John Blount and three crew lost their lives with an inquest blaming metal fatigue in the gearbox for the crash. No royals were on board.

A source told the newspaper: "It put her off completely. That's why she's so worried about William and his family."

As a result, Her Majesty reportedly only uses helicopters when she has no other choice and especially dislikes them in the winter and will not board one after dark.

According to reports, the Cambridges often fly together in a helicopter with a crew and pilot and sometimes William gets behind the controls too.

Back in May, William was pictured walking to a helicopter with his wife and three children.

An unwritten rule prevents senior royals from flying together just in case disaster strikes.

Technically William should never travel on a flight with his father Prince Charles or his children.

The protocol was relaxed as William's family grew bigger and they began to split their time between London and Norfolk.

He graduated from his RAF training course in 2010, qualifying as a pilot.

He made brave rescues in Sea King helicopters and then qualified as a captain in 2012. He was also a pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance from 2015 to 2017.
