Queen smiles during video call after Prince Harry claims Palace 'tried to smear Meghan'

The Queen has been seen smiling during a royal video call just hours after her grandson Prince Harry claimed The Firm "tried to smear" his wife Meghan Markle.

The monarch, 95, appeared via videolink from Windsor Castle to receive His Excellency Lim Tuan Kuan, the High Commissioner for the Republic of Singapore, and his wife Patricia Teh, at Buckingham Palace.

She looked cheerful during the virtual audience, hours after Harry's latest claims were aired for the first time.

In the first instalments of his documentary series with Oprah Winfrey, Harry opened up about his mental health and the trauma he lived after his mum's death.

The Duke of Sussex also accused the Palace of trying to "smear" Meghan Markle with bullying claims in the wake of their bombshell interview with Oprah earlier this year.

Harry said: "Before the Oprah interview had aired, and because of their headlines and the combined effort of The Firm and the media to smear her, I was woken in the night to hear Meghan crying into her pillow because she doesn't want to wake me up because I'm already carrying too much.

"That's heartbreaking.

"I held her, we talked and she cried and she cried and she cried."

Following the bullying claims, Meghan Markle's spokesperson said: "The duchess is saddened by this latest attack on her character, particularly as someone who has been the target of bullying herself and is deeply committed to supporting those who have experienced pain and trauma.

"She is determined to continue her work building compassion around the world and will keep striving to set an example for doing what is right and doing what is good."

Harry said he did not go to his family when Meghan felt suicidal because he was ashamed the situation had got "that bad" and also suspected the royals would not have been able to help.

The duke said: "That was one of the biggest reasons to leave, feeling trapped and feeling controlled through fear, both by the media and by the system itself which never encouraged the talking about this kind of trauma.

"Certainly now I will never be bullied into silence."

The Queen returned to work at the end of April, just weeks after Prince Philip's death.

Among her recent engagements, she received the Slovenian ambassador Simona Leskovar, who was photographed curtseying to the monarch by video link today from Buckingham Palace.

The monarch was seen on a computer screen, dressed in a dark pink floral dress.

She also spoke with the ambassador from the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Sidya Ould Elhadj.
