'Queen showed dignity during her reign, but PM based his office on lies and lawbreaking'

Tory MPs are weighing up whether or not to oust Boris Johnson.

There will be a vote of confidence if 54 of them submit letters calling for his departure.

If they are in any doubt about the Prime Minister’s unpopularity they should watch the scenes of him being booed as he arrived at the thanksgiving service for the Queen.

The crowds who were there to toast the monarch were voicing the opinion of the whole country when they expressed their disapproval of Mr Johnson.

The contrast with the Queen could not be greater. Her Majesty has conducted herself with dignity and decorum throughout her reign, while the Prime Minister has debased his office through his lying and lawbreaking.

The public has made clear its feelings about Mr Johnson’s fitness to govern. Now it is time for the Conservatives to do the same.

If Tory MPs care about standards in public life and if they wish to restore honesty and decency in Downing Street they will call time on his shabby premiership.

Get it cleared

Cataract surgery may be classed as a minor op but it has major implications.

Many older people are unable to live the life they want if they struggle with their eyesight.

It can prevent them from being able to go out at night, drive or read information boards at bus and train stations.

They are also more at risk of falls, which can result in fractures that require hospital stays.

This is why the Government urgently needs to take steps to clear the backlog of people waiting for cataract surgery. In some parts of England the waiting list is seven months.

The pandemic is partly responsible but this is also a consequence of the Tories failing to invest in the NHS over the past 12 years.

Doomtown rats

Rats are being trained to find people trapped in rubble after earthquakes.

The rodents heading to disaster zones will be experts at hide and squeak.
