Queen shares 'favourite photo' of herself and Prince Philip ahead of beloved husband's funeral

They may be monarchs - but in this photo, they could be any other long-standing couple relaxing on holiday together.

On the eve of her husband's funeral, Her Majesty The Queen has made a much-loved family photo public.

Sharing the image, Buckingham Palace said it was one of Queen Elizabeth's II's favourite images of herself and Prince Philip, who died on April 9 and will be laid to rest on Saturday.

The image shows the royal couple as they are rarely seen – relaxing together away from public duties and enjoying the stunning scenery of the Scottish Highlands.

The pair relax on the grass at the Coyles of Muick, a beauty spot near the town of Ballater in Aberdeenshire.

The picture was taken by their daughter-in-law the Countess of Wessex in 2003, and shows the couple sitting on a rug together.

The image is thought to have been taken when the Roaysl were enjoying their traditional summer break at the Queen’s nearby private estate of Balmoral.

It shows the private face of the Queen and her husband, giving the public an insight into how the Queen will remember her husband of 73 years.

Coyles of Muick stands above the entrance to Glen Muick and rewards walkers with an uninterrupted view to the mountain of Lochnagar.

The area is clearly a favourite spot for the Queen as she has named a corgi puppy which she was recently gifted to the monarch Muick.
