Queen's tennis 2019: Juan Martin del Potro withdraws due to knee injury

Juan Martin del Potro has been forced to withdraw from this year's Queen's Club due to a knee injury.

Del Potro had earlier marched into the second round of the Fever-Tree Championships, beating Canadian Denis Shapovalov in straight sets.

The world number 12 from Argentina, seeded third, served out the first set after an error-strewn service game from Shapovalov gifted Del Potro a break for 6-5.

The 30-year-old, who has never got past the quarter-finals at Queen's, grabbed an early break in the second set and wrapped up a 7-5 6-4 win - but he will now miss the rest of the tournament.

Del Potro's withdrawal means Feliciano Lopez receives a walkover into the quarter-finals after beating Marton Fucsovics 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.

Tournament director Stephen Farrow said via Twitter: “It is a great shame that Juan Martin has been forced to withdraw.

"The crowd loves him here, just as they do all over the world. We wish him a full and speedy recovery, and hope to see him back here next year.”
