The Local Government Association urged ministers to keep their promise to overhaul social care, as fears grew that few details about the long-promised reform will be revealed when the Government sets out its legislative programme for the coming year tomorrow.
LGA chairman James Jamieson said: “All of us in local government want to see the Queen’s Speech set out the plans we have been waiting for. This is about an investment in people, in all of us. A failure to act will be a bitter blow to everyone connected to social care.”
In a letter to Chancellor Rishi Sunak, the LGA said: “The decisions your Government makes on funding and reform have the potential to positively impact, to a significant degree, both the millions of people who draw on, or work in, care and support, and the many millions more who will do so in decades ahead.”
The Government said improving social care “remains a priority” and ministers have previously said plans will be brought forward this year.
Local authorities want the system to move from being based around care homes and hospitals, to one which focuses on prevention and community support.
