Queen's quick response to wife of French president's awkward 'penis' comment

After years and years of practise, the Queen is a pro when it comes knowing exactly the right thing to say at exactly the right moment.

During her time on the throne she's found herself in countless awkward situations, but she always manages to navigate her way through them with grace.

A perfect example of this was during a conversation with Yvonne de Gaulle, the wife of former French president Charles de Gaulle during the couple's visit to Buckingham Palace.

Adam Helliker, who is about to publish a book about the Royal Family, writes about a rather awkward 'penis' comment during a conversation about Madame de Gaulle's upcoming retirement.

He told the Sun : “A guest asked Madame de Gaulle what she was most looking forward to in her retirement, which was imminent.

“With great elaboration (as she didn't speak much English) she replied: ‘A penis.’"

Oh dear...

But the Queen turned it around and stepped in to correct the situation.

Mr Helliker continues: “An awkward silence ensued for some time, until the Queen herself came to the rescue, and she said with a broad grin: ‘Ah, happiness.’”

Unsurprisingly, Prince Philip loved the awkward exchange and it's said to be one of his favourite stories of all time.

It's fair to say that the Duke doesn't have quite the same talent when it comes to saying the most appropriate thing.

His colourful use of language and gaffes make him one of the more interesting members of the Royal Family - but on occasion they've been downright offensive to individuals, hosts and important figures.

But there was one comment that apparently got him into big trouble with his loving wife the Queen, and it's because it was about her appearance.

The Daily Mirror's former royal correspondent James Whitaker reported on the comment back in 2007.

It came after his cousin Patricia Mountbatten complimented the Monarch on her skin.

Mr Whitaker wrote: "When Philip's cousin Patricia Mountbatten remarked on Elizabeth's flawless complexion, the Prince joked: 'Yes, and she's like that all over."
