Queen's Park 0 Airdrie 0: Diamonds hold league leaders after stalemate

Airdrie made it back-to-back games unbeaten in League One after holding leaders Queen's Park to a goalless draw at Firhill.

Spiders got the better of Ian Murray's men in last week's SPFL Trust Trophy win on penalties, but the sides couldn't be separated over 90 minutes for the second game running.

The Diamonds will rue a glaring first half miss from Adam Frizzell when the winger fired wide in the box when he really should have scored.

But they also have goalkeeper Max Currie to thank for denying Spiders stars Simon Murray and Liam Brown with good stops.

The result, however, sees Airdrie slip to second bottom in the table after they were leapfrogged by rivals Peterhead, who they beat on their last league outing.

Airdrie - who are almost back to full strength after last month's Covid outbreak - made four changes from their cup exit, as goalkeeper Max Currie, Calum Gallagher, Scott Agnew and Scott McGill came into the side. Jay Cantley, Sam Wardrop and Jordan Allan dropped to the bench, while there was no place in the squad for last week’s scorer Callum Smith.

Spiders boss Laurie Ellis also changed his goalkeeper from the cup clash as Calum Ferrie was replaced by Willie Muir between the sticks as one of six alterations. Callum Yeats, Darren Lyon, Luis Longstaff, Calum Biggar and Bob McHugh also made way, with Simon Murray, Thomas Robson, Jack Thomson, Louis Longridge and Grant Gillespie returning to form a strong side.

The hosts were first to threaten inside three minutes when Simon Murray's curling free-kick on the edge of the box forced Currie into a good stop at his left-hand post.

Currie also got down well in 19 minutes when he thwarted Liam Brown's low drive inside the box, which sparked a flurry of goalmouth action.

Airdrie raced down the other end and Calum Gallagher will be disappointed with his tame sidefoot effort after he was picked out by unmarked.

From Willie Muir's save, Queen's worked the ball down the left flank and Airdrie defender Rico Quitongo made a fantastic last-ditch interception at the back post, just as Murray looked set to volley the cross home.

Murray forced Currie into action again in 35 minutes. The striker burst into the box and curled a strike towards the top corner, but the Diamonds No.1 produced a fine save to palm the effort over the crossbar.

A fizzing 20-yard strike from Adam Frizzell stung the hands of Muir down the other end.

And Frizzell should have broken the deadlock four minutes before the break. Gabby McGill played a neat-one two with Gallagher and raced into the box before picking out Frizzell, only for the Diamonds midfielder to slot the ball agonisingly wide of the post when he should have buried it.

It was fine margins between these two last week and it looked like one goal could be the difference.

Early in the second half another chance went abegging for the visitors when Fizzell's delivery across the face of goal was palmed out straight to Gallagher, but it came at him so quickly he couldn't keep his header on target from just a few yards out.

Rhys McCabe, left, went close for Airdrie (SNS Group)

Airdrie almost pulled off a piece of magic when Rhys McCabe spotted Muir off his line and his speculative effort from just inside his own half flashed past the post, with the Spiders keeper scrambling back towards his goal.

In 71 minutes Louis Longridge's header from Max Gilles' cross was handled well by Currie.

The Diamonds were dealt a blow when Gallagher hobbled off after failing to shake off the effects of a Longridge challenge and he was replaced by Jordan Allan.

Both sides huffed and puffed in search of a winner, but neither could find the cutting edge to earn maximum points.

The Diamonds are back in action on Tuesday night when they host Alloa in a clash rearranged from last month due to the Covid outbreak at New Broomfield.
