The Sun’s decision to publish pictures of the Queen as a child giving the Nazi salute has provoked a wide range of opinion on Twitter.
Damian Thompson, associate editor of the Spectator, is not amused:
Yup, @StigAbell, we know Edward VIII was a Nazi-sympathising parasite, but what’s so great about humiliating the Queen?

Channel 4 News political correspondent Michael Crick, however, praised the newspaper:
Congratulations to The Sun for publishing photo of 6-year old Queen giving Nazi salute in 1933. Of course they should have published it

BBC technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones also thinks it is a good story:
Whatever you think of the Sun, Queen doing a Nazi salute is an amazing scoop which any paper would have published (except perhaps Mail?)

As Cellan-Jones intimated, the Daily Mail has decided that the public is outraged by the Sun’s story:

“beaubodor” quips:
Stunned at the Sun front page not blaming the BBC for the Queen's Nazi salute.

Meanwhile, Times columnist David Aaronovitch was unimpressed with the coverage of the story on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme:
Some sepulchral tones used on @BBCr4today discussion of the #salute pictures. Really not necessary. No-one thinks the Queen is a Nazi.
