Queen's lunch with Lewis Hamilton interrupted after unexpected incident involving her dog

Lewis Hamilton experienced a rather awkward moment during lunch with the late Queen Elizabeth II just a year after receiving an MBE in 2009 for his services to motorsport.

The seven-time world champion's achievements within F1 have led to him meeting the Royal Family on more than one occasion, and after the awarding of his MBE, Hamilton was lucky enough to sit down for a spot of lunch with The Queen.

But not everything went to plan, as F1 great Hamilton was told off for flouting the rules at the dinner table, while a rather strange incident also occurred involving one of The Queen's dogs.

Hamilton previously recalled: "I had the best lunch with her, it was amazing, one of the butlers I think stepped on the dog. I just always remember this dog yelling out because someone stepped on him accidentally."

Hamilton also opened up on the royal telling off he received for his table manners at the same lunch. He was one of eight guests of The Queen's but he had to be on his absolute best behaviour as he was given the real honour of being seated next to Her Majesty.

The 37-year-old revealed: "There was about eight of us and I turned up after the Brazilian Grand Prix and I walked in and saw the seating plan and I was sat right next to her.

"So I was excited, this is cool. So I sat down and she was to my right and I started to talk to her and she was like: “No, you speak that way first and I’ll speak that way, and I’ll come back to you'."

While that was awkward enough, it certainly didn't spoil Hamilton's grand day out, after he shared a long chat with The Queen - a memory that will stick with him forever.

"She spoke to the guy next to her for like five minutes and then she spent the rest of the time talking to me. It was really, really cool."

And following her death last Thursday, the F1 icon paid an emotional tribute. "How do you find the words to describe the loss of Her Majesty The Queen? She was truly an iconic leader, an inspiration and a reassuring presence for most, if not all, of our lives," Hamilton wrote on Instagram.

"Since the sad news yesterday, I’ve been reflecting on her incredible life. She was a symbol of hope for so many and she served her country with dignity, dedication and kindness. She was truly like no other and I’m grateful to have lived during her time. Her legacy will be long-lasting and her passing deeply felt.

"I had the incredible honour of being able to spend time with her. It is something I’ll never forget. We talked about our shared love of dogs and she was incredibly generous with her time.

"I know the whole nation and many others around the world will be mourning her loss and my thoughts and prayers are with her family and all those close to her, who have lost a loved one. Rest in Peace."
