Paul Vallely, associate editor of The Independent, has been recognised in the Queen's birthday honours list. He was appointed CMG (Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George) "for services to journalism and to the developing world". Vallely, a prolific writer on the Third World, was a correspondent in Ethiopia during the 1984-5 famine and named international reporter of the year. He co-authored a report for the Commission for Africa which played a major role in last year's G8 summit. (Via Media)
