Queen's funeral to be aired on three massive screens in Manchester city centre

People are being encouraged to come together in the city centre on Monday to mark the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Space for up to 10,000 people at three different locations is being set-up to view live TV coverage from 9am onwards.

There will be two outdoor screens, at Cathedral Gardens and Exchange Square, with one indoors in Manchester Cathedral.

Each site is fully open to members of the public, with no need for a ticket, operating on a first come first served basis. Entry into the areas will be open from 9am with subtitled TV coverage of the funeral to be shown until around 5pm.

All sites will be wheelchair accessible with seating available to those who need it. An accessible viewing area will also be available in Cathedral Gardens.

People planning on being in the area for the whole day are encouraged to bring their own chairs and there own refreshments, as nearby shops may not be open. No alcohol is allowed on these sites and no glass bottles.

Cllr Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: “This Monday will be an historic occasion as Queen Elizabeth II is honoured with a state funeral. We recognise that many people will take comfort in gathering together to share the moment as they pay tribute to the late Queen and reflect on her long and momentous reign. We are pleased to be able to support this communal remembrance through a public screening of the event."

Bag searches will be carried out on entry to any of the sites and people will be able to come and go as needed from the venues, unless they reach capacity. Toilets will be available in the Arndale all day but there will be extra facilities provided in Cathedral Gardens.

The Metrolink service will be suspended in Exchange Square for the State Funeral. Travel advice can be found via Transport for Greater Manchester: tfgm.com/monday-19-september.
