Queen's funeral 'expected' to be a Bank Holiday for Brits to pay their respects

A Bank Holiday is 'expected' to be announced in the UK for the Queen's funeral. Queen Elizabeth II sadly died on Thursday afternoon at Balmoral at the age of 96.

A Period of National Mourning will be decided the the Government which is anticipated to run until the day after the funeral for the Queen. The funeral is expected to take place over the next 10 days with an announced to be made in due course.

On the day of the funeral, it is expected a public holiday - a National Day of Mourning - will be introduced to honour the UK's longest reigning monarch. However, the decision on whether to open or close will be left with individual businesses, BirminghamLive reports.

A state funeral will be held for the Queen at Westminster Abbey for invited guests. A committal service will follow at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

Members of the public will be able to watch both services on TV with a two-minute silence taking place across the country as she is buried. It's anticipated Her Majesty will lie in state for several days to allow the public to pay their respects.

A military procession through London is also planned as the Queen's coffin is taken to and from Westminster. Thousands are expected to line the route, but final arrangements will take into account the current Covid-19 rates.
