Queen's funeral bank holiday guidance including how to find out if you get the day off

It has been confirmed the Queen's funeral will be a national Bank Holiday meaning millions across the UK could be getting time off work.

The funeral will take place next Monday, September 19 at 11am with people set to come out in their thousands to pay their respects. However despite being designated a holiday, a day off work is not guaranteed for everyone.

New guidance from authorities confirms that each employer will make their own decision on whether or not they will give staff the day off. A notice with some frequently asked questions from the UK Government was released.

It read: “This is a matter for discussion between individuals and their employer. There is no statutory entitlement to time off for bank holidays, but employers may include bank holidays as part of a worker’s leave entitlement.

“The government cannot interfere in existing contractual arrangements between employers and workers. However, we would expect that many workers will be able to take the day off on the bank holiday.

"We also expect employers to respond sensitively to requests from workers who wish to take the day of the funeral off work.”

In addition to this, the guidance, as reported by MEN, also states that staff should speak with their bosses if they would be due a day’s holiday in lieu if they decide to work on the day of the funeral date. That’s the same policy for overtime rates, the government says, and reclaiming annual leave days if it is granted as a free day off by your employer.

They added that whilst there are no plans of making September 19 an annual Bank Holiday, schools will be closed and the Government are "not asking them to remain open on the day of the bank holiday."
