Queen's dedication and longevity - how the world media paid tribute to her life

Media around the world have been reporting on the death of the Queen who was the most globally recognised monarch and the focus has been on her longevity and dedication to her role.

The widespread coverage of the Queen’s Jubilee in June was an indication of the status that she was held in as a world leader and her deteriorating health has been widely reported in major international outlets.

The news broke at 6.30pm in the UK and immediately there was an outpouring of grief across the Commonwealth and further afield.

In the UK, the Express said "Britons flood the streets united in grief" while the Daily Mail described the "Royals' saddest journey".

For The Times it headlined her "unwavering sense of commitment to her people and her country" and The Sun simply called her "Mother of a Nation".

Further afield, in Australia the Daily Telegraph called the Queen “Irreplaceable” and it described how she was “the stoic Queen who ruled over us for generations, a steadfast monarch who never wavered as wars, pandemics and prime ministers came and went before her.”

The New Zealand Herald led with Charles’ tribute and his “greatest sadness”.

In Canada the National Post said: “Elizabeth’s devotion to duty cemented her as the greatest queen of all time.”

It continued: “Queen Elizabeth ll ushered in a new monarchy for a modern age, one that was more in touch with the dreams and aspirations of the public.”

The New York Post headlined on the Queen’s longevity saying: “Ruled for 7 decades, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.” It focused in on her successor Charles saying: “Once an awkward, self-doubting young man, he takes the throne, at 73, as a self-assured, grey-haired eminence.”

The Queen was the most visible face of European monarchy and newspapers across the Continent have paid tribute with Italian paper La Stampa calling her the “Queen of the century”, Germany’s Bild said she is now “back with her Philip” and Frances’s Le Monde described her “extraordinary reign”.

In Spain, ABC called the Queen “eternal” and El Pais said that Elizabeth was “the universal representation of European royalty, the most clear demonstration of the survival of monarchy down to her personality.” The paper said she was “the perfect combination of traditionalism, invisibility, liturgy, touches of modernity and delicate neutrality.”

In Argentina Infobae said how she was a “constant figure” amongst change. “The country where Lilibet was born was not the same as where she died. Society, economically and socially, changed but in times of uncertainty she was a constant. Queen Elizabeth continued her unchanging routine and put her responsibility as monarch ahead of her personal desires,” it said.
