Queen's coffin will pass through Perth and Kinross on journey to Edinburgh

The Queen's coffin and Royal Cortege will travel through Perth and Kinross today on its way to Edinburgh from Balmoral.

The journey will start from Balmoral at 10am and is due to arrive in Edinburgh six hours later.

It is anticipated the cortege will reach the Swallow roundabout in Dundee after 2.15pm and then head down the A90 and M90 through Perth and Kinross, over the Friarton Bridge, en route to Edinburgh.

Perth and Kinross Council say significant volumes of traffic are expected and anyone planning on travelling today has been urged to be prepared for delays or find an alternative route.

They have urged mourners wishing to observe the Royal Cortege to plan ahead and take account of the "weather conditions, limited facilities and the likelihood of spending long periods at the roadside".

A spokesman said: "Parking facilities along the A90 between Dundee and Perth are anticipated to be extremely busy. Motorists must park in a way that is safe, considerate and maintains access for emergency vehicles at all times.

If you will be on the route of the cortege at any point, please be mindful of your personal safety and that of others.

"To allow the cortege to pass and in the interests of public safety, we have issued a traffic order for contingency purposes which may impact a number of roads and will be implemented in whole or in part as required in Perth and Kinross. "

The roads affected by the Royal Cortege journey and the local proclamation of the accession of King Charles III (at approximately 4.45pm outside the Concert Hall following the proclamation in Edinburgh today) are:

PKC has urged people not to leave flowers on the roads adding: "Those who wish to leave a floral tribute may do so at the viewpoint on Tay Street in Perth."

Police Scotland Deputy Chief Constable Malcolm Graham said: “As the Chief Constable has said, the loss of Her Majesty The Queen is deeply felt and policing has an important role to play in the coming days to ensure ceremonial events take place safely and with dignity.

“Our priority is public safety and we are working with partners, including the UK and Scottish governments, as well as local authorities, to support the delivery of planned events.

“We understand that the public will want to show their respects to Her Majesty and we would urge them to do so safely.

“If you are attending to view the Queen’s cortege, please do not leave your vehicle at the side of the road as this poses a risk to public safety. Please only park in designated areas and follow the directions of stewards and police officers.

“We would also urge people not to stand in unsafe areas and to keep off the carriageway at all times. There will be rolling road closures along the route."
