Queen's Brian May had 'very black moments' in lockdown as he feared to lose his freedom

Brian May was never one to let get things get on top of him – until Covid reared its hideously ugly head.

But he now knows how it is to be gripped by the “horror” of a debilitating panic attack.

The Queen guitarist – who had a heart attack last year – admits having “very black moments” in the pandemic.

He said: “I never used to get panic attacks but recently... yeah.” Thankfully, he also found the perfect “soothing agent” in times of stress in the shape of a good old fashioned cuppa.

The vegan, 73, said: “Tea and a biscuit is comfort stuff."

He went on: “I have my secret sin, which are Kit Kat dark chocolate bars which are gorgeous.” Telling of his struggles over the past year, he said: “I had some very black moments thinking my freedom is gone and the ability to do anything with my life is gone.”

Brian and singer pal Kerry Ellis have released a song titled Panic Attack, which they first recorded two years ago.

He has rewritten it to reflect ongoing turmoil and uncertainty. Lyrics include “I can’t get my breath” and “Feels like life or death”.

“We got to New Year realising it is not going to be alright, and it did get worse,” said Brian, who will give profits to charity.

But the star is optimistic brighter days are on the way.

“I think it is damn well going to be alright,” he said.

Brian last year suffered a heart attack, was rushed to hospital, and, despite coming "very near death", has made a full recovery.

He found out that three of the arteries to his heart were blocked after suffering pain from a gardening accident.

Luckily, he's fully recovered after having an angiogram and stents fitted in his heart.
