The Queen has recognised more than 1,100 people in her birthday honours list with many being awarded for their work during the coronavirus pandemic.
Around 23 per cent of the recipients are recommended for Covid-19 service which are given for charitable and voluntary support to communities, service in health and social care and to those who have provided critical infrastructure support.
Among those receiving an award for work during the pandemic include Kate Bingham, lately Chair of the Vaccine Taskforce, who will get a damehood.
While a damehood also goes to Professor Sarah Gilbert, Saïd Professor of Vaccinology at the Jenner Institute for her pivotal role in developing a vaccine for covid.
In Scotland, Professor Linda Bauld, chair of public health at the University of Edinburgh and adviser to the Scottish Government on covid, will be made an OBE.
Meanwhile, Scottish singer Lulu is to be made a CBE for her services to Music, Entertainment and Charity.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson paid tribute to all those who were recognised.
He said: “The Queen’s Birthday Honours allow us to pay tribute to all those who have gone above and beyond in their service to this country.
“Throughout the pandemic we have seen countless examples of every day heroes. From those using their expertise to help develop life-saving vaccines, which are now being rolled out successfully to all parts of the UK, to the people who have given time and energy to care for their communities.
“We should take heart from the stories of those receiving honours today and be inspired by their courage and kindness. May they be a reminder of all that we can achieve when we come together as a society.”
