Queen 'preparing surprise' for Kate Middleton to mark landmark royal anniversary

This April, the Duchess of Cambridge will celebrate her 10th wedding anniversary with Prince William, marking the end of her first decade of life in the royal family.

In that time we've seen her grow from a slightly nervous young woman into a vital part of The Firm with a collection of vital charity work and mum to the future king.

Kate reportedly has a "fantastic relationship" with her husband's grandmother, the Queen, and the two women have been in touch regularly during the pandemic.

As well as chatting about work, Kate has been calling to check in on the Queen and to keep her updated on how Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are getting on.

So it's hardly surprising that the Queen wants to do something special to mark Kate's 10th anniversary of royal life.

Royal author Duncan Larcombe tells OK! magazine: "It’s highly likely she’ll be planning a special secret something to honour Kate’s 10 years in the royal family – something she can do to mark it.

To mark her eighth wedding anniversary, the Queen presented her with a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (RVO), which is her highest seal of approval.

Awards under the Royal Victorian Order are made personally by the Queen, and not on the recommendations of Downing Street unlike many of the others she hands out.

The RVO has five classes from member to Knight or Dame Grand Cross, and Kate follows in the footsteps of the Duchess of Cornwall, who received the same honour in the Queen's 2012 Diamond Jubilee year.

It is likely the honour recognised Kate's work in her first eight years as a member of the monarchy.

Duncan also explains that Kate now has a direct line to the Queen so they can chat whenever they wish, rather than going through their aides and staff.

The two women have carried out several joint engagements together, most recently when they were reunited for the first time since the first lockdown with other members of the royal family in Windsor.

After Kate and William's Thank You train tour of the UK, they joined the Queen, Prince Charles, Camilla, Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex to meet local volunteers and key workers, who would be spreading festive cheer during the Christmas period.

They were serenaded by the The Salvation Army Band who performed a selection of Christmas carols, before meeting Commissioners Anthony and Gillian Cotterill – the Territorial leaders of The Salvation Army.

The monarch's appearance was the first time she has been seen in public with the Prince of Wales and senior members of the monarchy en-masse since before the coronavirus pandemic.

Members of The Firm kept a distance from each other's respective bubbles as they posed for a photo.

The 94-year-old monarch was dressed in a vibrant red coat, matching hat and black gloves and carrying her trademark Launer handbag.

Kate wore a dark green coat with faux fur neckline for the special royal gathering.
