Queen of the South set to open foodbank in Dumfries

Queen of the South are set to support the community by opening a foodbank.

The club plans to site two shipping containers near their ground and transform them into a supermarket style venue where people can pay for provisions or collect them for nothing in a bid to beat food poverty.

Dan Armstrong, the club’s community development and commercial manager, told how the project was still at the planning stage although there were hopes to have it up and running by April.

He said: “We are looking to break down the stigma of food banks and through the community trust we applied for and got a £10,000 National Lottery grant through the eco fund and the aim is also to reduce food waste.

“We will fit out the containers with shelving and people can come in and pay for messages and others in food poverty can pick what they want. That money raised will go straight into regenerating the food bank.

“As a football club we have kinds of different demographics of social and economic people who come through the door and this would be a place were people would feel comfortable.

“The Arena has nine businesses within it and we hope to site the containers there which will be branded in club colours and crest.

“As I said we want to remove that stigma of a foodbank and people will look like they are in for their shopping or coming to the ground for the other businesses.

“It will be like a food hub and, for instance, if I have forgotten to bring anything for my lunch then I can pop round and buy bread and milk and whatever.

“As a club we have been asking for donations for foodbanks at Christmas time but now it is going towards our own foodbank when we launch it.”
