Queen of the South score a winner with online education programme during coronavirus lockdown

Queen of the South have scored a winner with an online education programme during lockdown.

The Championship club launched a project to help parents with home schooling by incorporating football themes into learning on their social media sites.

For example the Queens squad numbers are used for maths equations and to help with writing kids were invited to pen a letter after signing for the club.

The School is Cool scheme has delighted young fans of the Palmerston club.

Dan Armstrong, community and commercial manager for Queens, said: “It’s a project we’d been working on for some time to help parents out while schools were closed.

“It’s a way of getting kids who are interested in football but might not enjoy subjects like maths involved and enjoying it and vice versa.

“During the first lockdown we spoke to primary school teachers and got their thoughts about it and we came up with the classes from there.

“We wanted to give kids a different way of learning.

“We know teachers have lesson plans but if we’re able to add to that education that can only be beneficial for everyone. I know how hard a time it’s been for people home schooling and we’re trying to help out.”

The idea has gone down a storm, reaching thousands of people across social media. Some of the children who have taken part have sent in pictures to the club.

Dan, 23, said: “I didn’t really like maths in school but our teacher used a Formula One simulator to figure out how much petrol we needed to complete a lap and that sort of thing. You didn’t even realise you were doing maths but it worked and it stuck with me.

“It’s been really popular and the first two posts have had more than 33,000 interactions. That’s not what it’s about but it shows that people are using it and appreciate it.

“We’ll try and keep them going as long as we can.”
