Queen of the South head to Hamilton Academical as difficult Scottish Championship week continues

Queen of the South travel to Hamilton tonight as they continue one of their hardest weeks of the season.

The Doonhamers drew 0-0 with Morton on Saturday and now face Accies before travelling to Rugby Park to take on Killie on Saturday.

But manager Allan Johnston insists that the home side won’t have it all their own way this evening.

He said: “Hamilton have got Premiership players but they are under a lot of pressure.

“You know what it’s like when you don’t maybe start as well as people’s pre-season expectations. We’ve got two hard games coming up against teams who got relegated from the top flight.

“We know it’s going to be very difficult but we’re more than a match for all the teams in this division. It’s one we’re looking forward to.”

Captain Willie Gibson is desperate for three points to increase the gap between the South and the bottom sides in the league.

After Saturday’s draw he said: “I said to the boys it was important that if you want to be at the right end of the table and don’t want a long, hard season, then you have to win at home.

“We have not won enough at home and it’s not just this season, it has been over the last five or six seasons. But we are trying and giving it our all.

“The boys are working incredibly hard for each other day in, day out. We go again when we play Hamilton and if we don’t win, we could see ourselves second bottom.”

Queens missed a few chances to get themselves further away from the bottom of the league on Saturday but they had to settle for a point against Morton.

Johnston said: “Overall, especially the first 15 minutes, we didn’t start well and it was a bit of a battle.

“We were unlucky with Wullie’s free kick that hit the post and a couple other efforts. Innes (Cameron) has a good chance and even the second half we’ve got chances.

“We should be winning games like that, it’s disappointing. The positive is getting a clean sheet but we should be picking up three points.”

The manager felt his side should have had a penalty and he’s still looking for his side to make Palmerston a fortress.

He said: “Ruben (Soares Junior) said it was a definite penalty on him in the second half. I don’t see why he would go down because he’s in a great position to score, he’s one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

“We want to make Palmerston a hard place to come.”
