Queen of the South celebrate double monthly awards success thanks to Glen's Vodka

Queen of the South have had reasons to celebrate a double thanks to Glen’s.

Boss Allan Johnston and striker Connor Shields have scooped the manager and player of the month awards for January from the vodka sponsors.

Johnston said: “It’s always nice to win these awards because it is a recognition that the team is doing well.

“Although it is my name that is on it, the award is for everyone not just me, it has been a real team effort both on and off the park.

“So, I have to thank all the other coaches and players, it’s a reward for their hard work.

“I am also delighted for Connor. He really deserves to win the player of the month. He has been flying recently and his performances week in, week out have been outstanding.

“He has been a real handful and caused all sorts of problems and has been scoring goals too which has been a major factor in us doing so well.”

Johnston led Queens on an impressive undefeated run in January that saw league victories over Ayr and Greenock Morton and a 2-2 draw with Arbroath. The club also eased through the second round of the Scottish Cup with a 3-0 victory over Queen’s Park.

Meanwhile, star striker Shields scored five goals in the month with a brace against Ayr United and Arbroath and another strike against Queen’s Park in the Scottish Cup. He has since been injured but the club are hopeful his ankle issue isn’t as serious as first feared.

He said: “It’s great news for me and the club.

“There are some really good players in the Championship so to be named as player of the month is an honour.

“We have been on a really good run and are unbeaten in January and that is down to the effort that we have all been putting in.

“I have been happy with the way I’ve been playing but it is a real team effort and I wouldn’t have won the award without the rest of the boys so they deserve some credit too.”

Colin Matthews, CEO of Glen’s owner the Loch Lomond Group, said: “After an undefeated run for Queens in January, including impressive league victories over Ayr and Greenock Morton, Allan Johnston is a more than worthy winner of the Scottish Championship Glen’s manager of the month award. My congratulations to him, his colleagues and his squad on a fantastic start to 2021.”
