Queen of the South boss refuses to celebrate despite moving off the bottom of Scottish Championship with Dunfermline Athletic draw

Queen boss Allan Johnston refused to celebrate after his team clawed themselves off the foot of the table.

The Doonhamers had raced into a three-minute lead through Alex Cooper in a six-goal drop-zone thriller at Dunfermline.

Lee Connolly and Innes Cameron also hit the mark but they failed to return with three points after being pegged back three times.

And, like his near namesake in Downing Street, Johnston was quick to dispense of any party talk after his men lost a third equaliser with just two minutes to go.

Johnston said: “I don’t think I can be happy. We have been ahead three times in the game and they have pegged us back each time.”

The gaffer was clearly frustrated to see his team continue to be dogged by set-piece weakness.

He said: “The hardest part of the game is creating chances from open play. We scored two from open play and one from a set piece. Their goals have come from two free-kicks and a corner.

“The first one is questionable because Roberto Nditi claims that he kicked the ball first and the boy caught him and the ref has given the free-kick outside the box that they score from.

“The second one, the boy gets across the front and it’s a good header but to then lose a goal in the last couple of minutes I think is harsh on the boys after the effort they put in.”

Now Johnston hopes his players can take the positives from scoring three away from home to push on out of the drop-zone. He said: “It’s always a concern losing goals but I think the positive from today is scoring three goals away from home. That’s always the hardest part to do.

“We looked a threat going forward and we are missing defenders – Paul McKay, one of the centre defenders pulled out before the game and Euan East stepped in 20 minutes before kick-off.

“Euan is just coming back from injury after six weeks out.”

Johnston praised the travelling fans for their support just days after being booed off following the Scottish Cup replay defeat by Cove Rangers.

He said: “It gives us confidence, You could see the supporters at the end of the game clapping the players off, I think they appreciated the effort.

“The boys gave everything for the cause.

“There were a lot of positive, individual performances and it sets us up for the upcoming games”.
