Allan Johnston paid tribute to his team for playing the waiting game to grind down Broomhill in their cup clash.
Queen of the South emerged 3-0 winners in the SPFL Trust Trophy tie against their Lowland League rivals, but despite a bright start it took an hour to grab a decisive second goal.
Johnston said: “We knew it was going to be difficult as they had caused an upset earlier by beating Clyde.
“We had to be patient when they got behind the ball and frustrated us.
“We were in control for the majority of the game and the only frustrating part for us was that we didn’t score enough goals. We should be scoring more goals with the amount of chances we created.
“But the other positive from the game, apart from the win, was that we had a clean sheet.”
Queens were gifted the opener when Broomhill gave away a sixth minute penalty which Ruari Paton despatched into the bottom right hand corner.

But it took until 61 minutes Lee Connelly to crack home the second before Wullie Gibson dinked a cheeky penalty for No.3 over keeper Jamie Smith.
Johnston said: “I called that from the side from the side of the pitch.
“Wullie just keeps getting better and better with age.
“It doesn’t matter where you play him he keeps coming up with the goods. I have played him all over the place including right back, left back, midfield and he tells us he can even play up front.
“He is getting better and better. He is a joy to watch and evening in training he is unbelievable. He works incredibly hard- and i say to the younger players that is the kind of level you need to be at if you want to progress your career.”
Johnston admitted his side had enjoyed a decent start to their season and added: “We have not been far away in games and it just that fine line between winning and drawing.
“But once you get confidence then you learn from your mistakes and kick on. So we are not far away no matter who we have been playing.”
