Queen of the South boss makes first two signings for new season

Queen of the South boss Wullie Gibson has snapped up two new players with the promise of more to follow.

He’s landed former Palmerston favourite Gavin Reilly on a two-year deal and David McKay on a one-year contract and revealed that a new goalkeeper could be next on his list.

Gibson lured frontman Reilly back to Dumfries from Livingston and said: “Gavin is a good lad and given the right kind of service he will score goals for us which was lacking last year. He has a clinical instinct and if we create half the amount of chances we did late on in the season then he will get a fair few goals.

“That is the number one reason why I signed him and number two is that, like me, he has a real love for the club and is a local boy.

“We have signed him on a two-year deal which shows the intent we have at the club going forward.”

Reilly was on loan to Morton last season from Livi and was Queens’ youngest ever scorer when he netted against Dumbarton on his debut in July 2010, aged just 17.

Reilly told the club website: “It’s great to be back. I had good times here in my first spell and always hoped to be back at some point.

“I hope to replicate the form from my first spell. It’s a place I love playing and having the relationship with the club that I do made it a no-brainer.

“After speaking to the gaffer, I am buzzing to get to work and look forward to what the next couple of years bring.”

Gibson has signed defender McKay from Raith Rovers, where he was loaned out to Montrose and Edinburgh City.

And Gibson revealed: “David is a very good defender and when I went into this job at first I enquired about him.

“But he had already played for two clubs in the season and so due to the rules about not playing for a third club that dictated that we were unable to sign him then.

“I had a wee chat with him last month and got an agreement with Raith last week and it was just a case of getting things done this week.”

McKay said on the club website: “It’s great to get this deal done and get my future sorted out early. I’m looking forward to working under the gaffer and giving my all for a great club.”

Gibson is targeting a goalkeeper to replace Josh Rae, who turned down a new deal.

He said: “I am working away right now and things don’t change over night, but we have spoken to two or three keepers that I think fit the part and are highly thought of.”

Meanwhile, Gibson confirmed Queens will play Kilmarnock in a closed doors pre-season friendly at Rugby Park on Tuesday,
June 21.
