Queen of the South boss fuming at latest controversial penalty call against Kilmarnock

Allan Johnston was left fuming at another controversial penalty decision at Palmerston on Saturday.

The Palmerston manager wasn’t happy with referee Colin Steven when he thought Roberto Nditi brought down Oli Shaw inside the box. However, replays showed the contact was made yards outside the penalty area.

Frustrated boss Johnston said: “It’s clearly never a penalty in a million years.

“Roberto has pulled him so it is a free-kick but he’s pulled him outside the box.

“That’s two weeks in a row the referees here have given shocking decisions. It’s us that get punished and it’s us that end up losing the three points.

“It changes the game and the second goal kills the game.”

Meanwhile, the manager is hoping to bolster the squad this month as the club aims to move away from the bottom of the table.

He said: “We need to add players. Ideally, we’ll bring in at least four if we can but they need to be players who improve the squad and that’s the challenge. It is difficult. We’re working on a few things and hope to get over the line.”

Once again Queens failed to register a shot on target and had their backs to the wall for most of the afternoon. A goal just before the break was a hammer blow and the controversial penalty call in the second half ended the match as a contest.

The defeat, combined with Morton hammering Dunfermline, means the Doonhamers sit two points off the foot of the table.

Johnston said: “We never started the game well and I thought Kilmarnock started brightly and had a couple of chances early on.

“We started to get back into the game when we changed things about a wee bit. But then we give away the goal before half-time. The first shot we’ve got to clear it, we get caught in possession and it’s a cheap goal to lose from a corner. Everybody is always disappointed when you lose a goal from a corner. We don’t win the first header and we don’t react to the second ball.”

“I thought in the second half we started to come into the game, alright we weren’t a goal threat, but at 1-0 you’ve always got a chance of getting something from the game against a good side.

“But then they get a penalty when it’s clearly never a penalty.”
