Queen of the South boss delighted as Arbroath win moves side into joint second in Scottish Championship

Queens sit joint second in the Championship as they continued their great run of form with an incredible comeback at Gayfield.

Two goals down midway through the first half, Allan Johnston’s side fought back to win 4-2 and end Arbroath’s unbeaten run in 2021.

The fightback was pleasing for the manager who feared the worst early on.

He said: “It speaks volumes about the players the way they come back.

“Early on in the campaign if we had lost a goal and been behind like that, that would probably have more or less been it.

“They’ve got that belief and they’ve got that winning mentality now. They expect to score goals and they are harder to beat.”

Johnston couldn’t see the fightback coming but he was thrilled with it. He said: “If I’m honest I didn’t see the fight back coming. In the first twenty minutes, we started really poorly, Arbroath picked up all the second balls, they were direct, pinned us back into our own half and made it difficult for us but once we got to grips with that I thought we were worthy winners.”

Ayo Obileye is quickly becoming a hero for the Doonhamers with some standout performance. The big 26-year-old put in another solid shift and scored a brace and the manager thought it was another good performance.

Allan said: “To be fair he has been terrific since moving into central midfield and I thought he was different class again with some of his passes.

“He is breaking things up and really gives us a physical presence on the pitch; when he is attacking headers like that he is hard to stop, he is a powerful guy.”

The boss just hopes that the injury to Isaiah Jones doesn’t hamper their current run of form. AJ added: “We are on a great run, but Izzy could be a big loss because he has been fantastic since he came in – fingers crossed it’s not as bad as it looks.

“With a lot of pace about our team, we are good at going forward and I think that was the difference at Arbroath with the pace and movement we had.”
