Queen of the South boss calls for improvement after loss to Inverness Caledonian Thistle

Queen of the South boss Allan Johnston says his side must do better after losing away to Inverness.

The Palmerston gaffer shuffled his pack for the match after Queens lost to Arbroath the week before and is looking for more from his players. Ruben Soares Junior and Ruari Paton dropped to the bench and Harry Cochrane missed the game as he was ill.

Johnston said: “They’ve not given enough if I’m being honest, we’re not as much of a threat as we should be. You need to take part in the game. You need to do more, if you’re a forward player we are looking for a wee bit of creativity, you need to be scoring goals, you need to be creating chances and if you’re not doing that then we will bring someone in who will.”

He added: “Against Arbroath we had millions of crosses and nobody was getting into the front for a tap in. You need to get across the defender to score goals and we were nowhere near it.

“Hopefully people will take it on board and learn because if they do that then we will score more goals.”

The manager also demanded more from his defensive players as the Doonhamers saw a point slip through their fingers in the Highlands thanks to some slack defending.

He said: “There is a reason why they are where they are and why we are where we are.

“There hasn’t been much in the games, its single goals, we are not far away and have been in every game, there has been nobody that has ran over us. It’s just that final decision making, that final pass or switching off and losing poor goals.

“We will lose goals but it’s annoying when it’s goals that we shouldn’t be losing. It’s all about making the right decisions. It’s easy in training but when you are under pressure sometimes, they make rash decisions.”

Lee Connelly got Queens back into the game against the league leaders with a beautiful strike only for them to throw it away a short time later.

Johnston added: “That is happening too often. There have been several games this season where we should be taking something from the game and we end up losing so we need to learn from it quickly.

“We should have taken at least a point with the way we played in the second half. We are a new squad, a young squad but when you play well, we have to take something.”
