Queen of the South boss Allan Johnston set to return from furlough

A touch of Magic will return to Palmerston next week when Allan Johnston comes off the furlough scheme.

Queen of the South chairman Billy Hewitson said it is “full steam ahead” as the Doonhamers prepare for the upcoming Championship season which starts in October.

The first few days will see AJ get back into the swing of things in Dumfries before he casts his eye over potential new recruits.

Billy said: “Allan is back on Monday and will be in Dumfries and start to talk to the players that are signed before looking at others. It will be a week to get our feet back on the pitch and see how we’re going.

“He’s been thinking about players but obviously he couldn’t do anything while he was on furlough.

“Next week will be full steam ahead though.”

After getting back to basics it will be a case of assembling a squad for the league and Betfred Cup campaigns.

Queens were drawn in group G alongside St Mirren, Morton, Partick Thistle and Queen’s Park.

The games will be played in October and November and while match days have been announced the SPFL has yet to publish the full fixtures.

While there have been concerns from some corners of the support about preparations for the new season the chairman is confident the club will be making some good additions shortly.

Billy added: “I think we just need to get back on Monday, get ourselves set up and then start looking at guys and bringing them along.

“There’s quite a few of the youngsters in the team who are entering their second year and Allan will be having a look at them.

“There’s lots of players out there so that’s not a worry for us.

“There are a lot of guys out there looking for clubs.

“There will most likely be some new faces that some people might not recognise at the club.

“Things are still up in the air but this is heading in the right direction.”
