Queen of the South boss admits frustration after Scottish Cup defeat to Cove Rangers

Beleaguered boss Allan Johnston admitted he was as frustrated as the fed up fans after Queen of the South slumped out of the Scottish Cup.

The Doonhamers were destroyed by League One leaders Cove Rangers and now miss out on a money spinning cup tie away to Hibs.

Sickened supporters booed at the end of the match and yelled abuse at the under fire Palmerston manager and many left before the end of the dismal cup loss.

Johnston said after the 3-0 crushing by Cove and fans abuse: “I would feel the same,

“I wouldn’t be happy getting beat by Cove either.

“I don’t think anyone is happy getting beat by Cove.

“Yeah, they’ve got good players but especially at home we should be creating more chances - at least and scoring goals against teams like that.

“We need to take the pressure off the defence and score more goals but we gave away cheap goals tonight. And we’ve actually defended well in recent weeks so that’s another frustrating part of it.

“It starts with losing the first goal and we end up chasing the game.

“I don’t think we got started first half. Their first goal they scored was a worldie, an absolute cracker. But it comes from our throw-in, we lose the challenge but it’s a great finish from (Fraser) Fyvie.

“But before that our keeper Sol (Brynn) made a couple of saves and we didn’t do enough in the first half.”

He added: “In the second half, although we lost two late goals, we were pressing for the equaliser but there wasn’t enough quality if I’m honest especially that final third of the pitch.

“We lacked that wee bit of creative edge, we didn’t have that. We had a few half chances but didn’t do enough to work the keeper.

“Maybe if Ruari Paton’s header goes over the line maybe that changes the game and swings it in our favour. Overall we didn’t do enough.”

Queens players felt skipper Wullie Gibson was impeded at Cove’s third goal and Johnston said: “It could’ve been a foul and we could’ve cleared it but it probably sums up our night losing such a cheap goal like that.

“The game was finished by then though and we were trying to chase a goal. They showed their quality to punish us.”

Queens have a lengthy casualty list for tomorrow’s vital collision with Dunfermline and are now missing Harry Cochrane following a training ground accident.

Johnston said: “You can see how thin we are on the ground.

“Harry Cochrane picked up a knock in training, it was just a simple shot from Lee Connelly and he’s went over his ankle. He looks like he’ll be out for a number of weeks. We’re a wee bit short the now and we’re obviously playing guys out of position.

“The last thing we can do is feel sorry for ourselves. We’ve got huge games coming up.

“I think we do need to strengthen. Hopefully we can do that in January but it’s always a difficult window to get players in.

“It was good to get Euan East back but he’s only just returned to training and only done a couple of sessions. Obviously he couldn’t start but it’s good to get some game time under the belt.

“Kieran McKechnie has been out for seven months and he’s only been training for a couple of weeks. He really needs a game but we’re that short of numbers the now that we need him for the bench as well.

“It’s a catch 22. We’ve got to make sure he’s right, the last thing we should do is throw him in too early and ends up picking up another injury.”
