Queen holds virtual audience welcoming Vietnamese ambassador via video link from Windsor

The Queen has carried out another virtual audience from Windsor Castle, welcoming the Vietnamese ambassador Nguyen Hoang Long via video link.

The monarch has strained her back and also been resting for nearly a month, after preliminary tests in hospital.

The health issues have caused her to forgo a series of official engagements, most recently missing the Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph.

But the 95-year-old head of state could today be seen on the computer screen in her Oak Room sitting room at Windsor, wearing a turquoise dress, with black collar detail, her pearl necklace and a brooch.

The Vietnamese ambassador, who was at Buckingham Palace with his wife Vu Huong Giang, presented his credentials, and the letters of recall of his predecessor.

Yesterday was the monarch’s first appearance since her reported back injury, as she was seen smiling whilst holding a face to face audience with General Sir Nick Carter, the Chief of the Defence Staff, at Windsor Castle.

She held a face to face audience with Prime Minister Boris Johnson last week but was not pictured doing so.

The Queen, dressed in a green, orange and white floral dress and wearing a string of pearls, was pictured standing as she greeted and chatted to General Sir Nick in Windsor's Oak Room.

The Oak Room is the Queen's sitting room where she spends much of her time, and which also doubles as her office.

It is the first time in nearly a month that the monarch has been pictured carrying out an in person engagement since she hosted a reception for the global investment summit at Windsor on October 19.

The nation's longest reigning monarch told the military chief it was "easier to continue" once you get into the top military job.

The Prince of Wales, who is on a tour of Jordan, has said the Queen is "alright" but "once you get to 95 it's not quite as easy as it used to be".

Meanwhile, the Palace said her back strain was not connected to the recent hospital stay where she was forced to spend the night at the King Edward VII in Marylebone last month to undergo “preliminary investigations” for an unknown condition.

Courtiers are understood to be working towards managing the Queen’s diary accordingly for the next few weeks leading up to Christmas, while she will continue to undertake light duties at Windsor Castle.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: "Following on from their recent advice that the Queen should rest for a few days, Her Majesty's doctors have advised that she should continue to rest for at least the next two weeks.

"The doctors have advised that Her Majesty can continue to undertake light, desk-based duties during this time, including some virtual audiences, but not to undertake any official visits."

The monarch has recently been spotted used a walking stick for the first time on royal visits.

Despite any recent medical wobbles, the monarch is said to be “totally committed” to entertaining her loved ones at her Norfolk home after missing out last year because of the pandemic.

Royal sources said she is determined to recover soon so she can see her family at their traditional festive gathering.

Last year restrictions meant the Queen and the late Prince Philip had a quiet Christmas alone at Windsor Castle.

A Palace insider said: “This year, more than ever, it is incredibly important to Her Majesty to be surrounded by her loved ones.

“The Queen is totally committed to hosting everyone as she hopes to make it back to full health in the coming weeks.

“Her Majesty is resting under doctors’ orders with the intention of being able to fully enjoy the company of her extended family over the holiday period."
