The Duchess of Edinburgh has recalled the moment Queen Elizabeth II told her to leave the table during a dinner at Balmoral.
Speaking on BBC 5 Live Sport on Tuesday (18 August), Sophie said she had been at the royal Scottish residence when Team GB played in the 2016 Women's Hockey Olympic final.
Sophie, who has been patron of England Hockey since 2006, described being updated on the game by someone serving at the table. She recalled how she was “twitching” in anticipation.
“Oh, for goodness' sake, just go!” Sophie said the late Queen told her, allowing her to leave the room to watch the final. She also revealed that Her late Majesty later came to watch the game whilst standing in the doorway.
“She couldn't cope with the pressure. She had to take herself away again.”
