Queen Elizabeth II dead: Will Camilla become Queen?

Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, is to be known as Queen Consort now Charles has become King.

Buckingham Palace today confirmed that the Monarch Queen Elizabeth had died at Balmoral. Buckingham Palace said: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow. "

In a previous message on the eve of her 70th anniversary on the throne in February 2022, Queen Elizabeth said it was her “sincere wish” for Camilla, 74, to have the title. Queen Consort refers to the spouse of a ruling king and would mean Queen Camilla will be her official title.

At the time of Camilla’s marriage to Charles in 2005 it was believed her title would be Princess Consort. Charles and Camilla were both divorcees when they married following Charles’ previous marriage to Princess Diana before that ended in 1996.

Plans for her title have long been a topic of discussion - but Queen Elizabeth’s personal intervention in February 2022 means she’ll be a fully-fledged member of the royal family with Charles. Although Camilla normally would automatically become Queen, uncertainty about public opinion threw doubts over her title before Queen Elizabeth’s backing.

Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth’s husband who died in April 2021, was known as Prince Consort as there is different practice for husbands of a female monarch. Since her marriage to King Charles, Camilla has been involved in a number of causes including advocating for literacy and supporting victims of domestic abuse.
