Queen Elizabeth II dead: Who becomes Head of Commonwealth and what is the commonwealth

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has died aged 96.

The nation is in mourning after Buckingham Palace released a statement to confirm the Monarch has passed away. It said: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.

Queen Elizabeth II had been head of the Commonwealth since her father, George VI, died in 1952. King Charles III has ascended to the throne to replace after her death.

The head of the Commonwealth is a ceremonial role and it was not automatic the new monarch would succeed her in this position. However, the former Prince of Wales was appointed as the designated successor at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2018.

The Commonwealth is an association of 56 independent state that first formed in 1949. The Head of Commonwealth is recognised by member states as the "symbol of their free association".
