Queen Elizabeth Bridge in Belfast closed due to security alert

A security alert is ongoing close to the Queen Elizabeth Bridge in Belfast after a suspicious object was found on a nearby vessel.

The PSNI are “currently in attendance at the River Lagan in Belfast, near Queen Elizabeth Bridge, following the discovery of a suspicious object on a vessel on the River Lagan”, they said in a brief statement issued this evening.

But in a tweet issued at around 11.15pm, they confirmed that the Queen Elizabeth Bridge and the nearby Lagan Weir footbridge have been closed.

ATO “will examine the object in due course”, they added.

The police said that there “is currently no disruption to transport links, however, this will be kept under review as police will work to ensure the safety of the public”.
