The Queen has spoken to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison to discuss how the country is fighting coronavirus.

She also sent her best wishes to all Australians and asked after their welfare on the call, Buckingham Palace said.

The royal family said in a tweet: "The Queen had an audience with the Prime Minister of Australia Scott Morrison via telephone this morning.

“Her Majesty asked about the welfare of Australians and how the country is combatting Covid-19.

“Her Majesty sent her best wishes to all Australians.”

Australia has had 97 coronavirus-related deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University, and more than 7,000 confirmed cases.

The Queen is the head of state in all Commonwealth countries including Australia.

Her grandson Prince William was reported earlier this year to be planning a visit to the Australian coastal towns hit by bush fires at Mr Morrison's request.

These plans are likely to be shelved until coronavirus lockdowns have been removed.

The Queen and other members of the royal family sent their condolences to the Australian people, after 20 died and more than 1,400 lost their homes to the fires.
