Queen, David Beckham and Adele lead tributes as England win Women's Euro 2022

A Chloe Kelly goal was enough for England to beat Germany 2-1 in extra time to win the UEFA Women's Euro 2022 in front of a crowd of 87,192.

It was a special moment watched by a peak audience of 17.4 million people and a number of notable figures have rushed to congratulate the Lionesses on their historic victory. The Queen led the tributes to the heroic team which won under the guidance of Sarina Wiegman, who has now won back to back Euros after her successes with The Netherlands in 2017.

Her Majesty, who was represented at Wembley by her grandson & FA President Prince William, said : "My warmest congratulations, and those of my family, go to you all on winning the European Women’s Football Championships. It is a significant achievement for the entire team, including your support staff.

"The Championships and your performance in them have rightly won praise. However, your success goes far beyond the trophy you have so deservedly earned.

"You have all set an example that will be an inspiration for girls and women today, and for future generations. It is my hope that you will be as proud of the impact you have had on your sport as you are of the result today. ELIZABETH R."

David Beckham and daughter Harper sent the team a good luck message before the game, and the former England captain uploaded an Instagram story following the match, with the word 'champions' written across the screen. His wife Victoria, said: "Congratulations to the Lionesses! What an inspiration!"

Pop star Adele was also one of the stars to congratulate the team on social media, uploading a message to Instagram which said: "You did it!! It's come home!!". Rollign Stones guitarist also set a message on Instagram, which said: "Congratulations to the girls. Come on you Lionesses. Grrr." While his post read: "You’ve made us all so proud. What an incredible result! Thank you forever!"

The match was played at Wembley, which was the last venue to host a match where an England senior team won a major honours, with Geoff Hurst scoring a hat trick in the 1966 World Cup Final. His message read: European Champions. Unbelievably proud. #Lionesses."

The levels of support were clear, and with the World Cup taking place next year in Australia and New Zealand, there is sure to be a high level of interest as to whether a similar result can happen to make the country celebrate in the same way again.
